Meet Chris Christie – BOLD JOURNEY

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chris Christie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Chris, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
That is a great question and one that I think every person searches for throughout their life! For me, it started when I very young when my father decided that alcohol was more important to him than his family. That day and that decision helped shape me into the person that I am today.

It was very clear to me in my early 20s that I needed to live a life of service to others. Whether it was through coaching sports or coaching in life, I recognized my need to work with young adults to help them discover their superpowers and then use those powers to live a life of purpose.

As I became older, the desire to make a difference in people’s lives became more important. That is why I founded The Character Mill. The two main focuses of TCM are The Mill which is a new social media platform focused on inspiring people to live their adventures today so they have stories, not regrets, to share tomorrow, and The Character Institute where we work with young adults who desire a bit of guidance, motivation and support to lead a life of purpose.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I truly believe that humans are the most incredible species on the planet! I also believe that we are innately kind and generous beings. It is when we allow outside influences to penetrate our very being is when we stray and deviate from the lives that we truly want. The more move away from that, the less we are in touch with who we truly are…outside of ego.

The two areas of The Character Mill are The Mill and The Character Institute. The Mill is your passport to new adventures and positive change! A few years ago after my older brother (who was my hero!) passed away, I read a stat that said “86% of people living in nursing homes share something in common. That is, they all have regrets of things they didn’t do in their life.” I hate that…I hate that with a passion. Right then, I knew I needed to come up with a way to inspire, motivate, and make it easier for people to live their adventures…whatever that looked like for them. I also love social media! Not what it currently is, but the concept behind it. So, The Mill was born! A new social media platform that reduces the barrier of entry to new adventures while also providing a social community of folks who share the passion to live life every day!

The word IKIGAI is very important to me and that is what The Character Institute is all about! It is my reason to wake up in the morning. As I was growing up and learning how to be an adult, I was very fortunate that while my father was no longer in the picture, many folks saw something in me and mentored me. I also recognize that not everyone has that opportunity. So, The Character Institute was created to provide young adults with mentoring and programs to assist them as they navigate the sometimes rough waters of being an adult and finding their purpose.

Another great question and one that I think about a lot! The first skill and one that is on the top of the list is PATIENCE. There are so many areas where patience is important. It can on the micro level in how we react to situations, the tone of voice of others during conversations, or news we receive as we go through our day. Learning to be patient before reacting is vital! But, patience is also important on the macro level. Business dealings, habits, and relationships are not completed in a short period. Patience allows us to let a process play out, let feelings grow, and allow for the natural course of things to take shape.

CHARACTER is the backbone of all of our programs. Character is the word we use to describe ourselves and others. It is important to note that every minute of every day provides us with the opportunity for growth in our character. When we focus on BEING, and less on reacting and listening to our ego, we begin to develop our character and the very essence of who we are and what defines us.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
A few years ago while developing The Mill and The Character Institute, I found that a few times a week my mind would wander and begin to pay too much attention to outside influences and the ego. When that occurred, anxiety, stress and the feeling of being overwhelmed followed shortly behind.

When I begin to feel this way I ask myself two questions. First, who am I BEING at this very moment? Second, is that helping me serve my purpose?

Those two questions, as simple as they are, bring me back to where I am focused and breathing!
